Place the two magazine boxes together in a “yin and yang” position. On one of the two long narrow sides (this will be the top of the briefcase), measure the length of the combined boxes to determine the center point. Place the zinc door handle in the center and use a pencil to mark the location of its screw holes.

On the opposite side (this will be the bottom), position the tee hinge on the short end so that the top of its body (strap) is flush with the seam of the magazine holders. Using a pencil, mark the screw holes for the hinge.

Using a 1/16” bit, pre-drill holes for the handle and hinge. If necessary, increase the bit size to reach the desired diameter.

Attach the handle and hinge using the #10-32 × 3/8” screws and rounded top nuts.

To install the drawer catch, measure down about 1” from the top of the handle side of the briefcase. Position the locking mechanism and catch over the seam so that they will create a nice seal between the magazine holders when locked. Mark the screw holes and pre-drill as before. Attach the drawer catch with the #6-32 × 3/8” screws and nuts.

Drill a hole in the center of both pieces of thin wood or Plexiglas.

Inside the bottom of the briefcase, place one of the pieces over one of the portholes in the magazine boxes. Place a doorstop on the outside, to serve as a foot on the bottom of the case. Using the screwdriver and a #10-32 × 1 1/2” screw on the inside of the briefcase, attach the doorstop. Tighten and secure it with bolts using needle-nose pliers, if necessary.

Repeat step 7 to install the other doorstop.

If you’d like to frame the holes on the top of the briefcase, glue on the reducing washers. Let sit overnight.
