Felt Tip: Craft a Supersoft Rug

How to cut (and sew) a rug

Nothing cozies up a room like a rug, especially when it’s soft enough to do double duty as a perch. Lately we’ve been inspired by the clean lines of vintage Scandinavian textiles, so we decided to create our own version, keeping a small space (and budget) in mind.

    1. Using a ruler, pencil, and piece of cardboard, make a template for the rug’s chevron stripe pattern by drawing a zigzag (3” wide and just over a yard long) on the cardboard and cutting it out.

    2. Using tailor’s chalk (or something that’ll mark on felt), trace and cut out four light gray zigzag stripes, two blue, and two green.

    3. Use the same template to cut eight stripes out of the Wonder-Under, being careful to keep the webbing attached to the paper backing .

    4. Measure and cut the dark gray felt into a 3’ x 4’ rectangle.

    5. Arrange the felt stripes on top with 3” of dark gray showing between them. In order for this to work, the first and last stripes will hang off the sides considerably.

    6. Flip over the felt stripes and place a Wonder-Under stripe on each, webbing side against the felt and paper side up .

    7. Use a hot iron to melt the webbing to the felt, and peel away the paper.

    8. Flip over the stripes and line up your design again, then-placing a sheet of parchment on top to keep the iron from marking the fabric-iron thoroughly to fuse together the felt. If it’s having trouble sticking, try steaming it lightly.

    9. Once everything is cooled and set, place the felt part of the rug on top of the non-slip rug pad, trimming away any felt or foam that hangs past the original dark gray rectangle.

    10. Stitch together the two parts, trying not to pass all the way through the felt layer so that the thread won’t show on the chevron side.

    11. Flip it over, lay it down, and lounge.
