A few times a month, I want to post readers’ favorite travel photos with a few tips for visiting the gorgeous spot. I’ll kick it off with these dreamy shots from White Sands National Monument, in southern New Mexico. I was there last summer.
If You Go:
The 8-mile dune drive loop is crazy; you feel like you’re driving down a gleaming snow-packed road. But the real fun here is climbing about the dunes. Don’t make the mistake of showing up here at high-noon when the sun is blazing hot (and killer bright!). Arrive late in the day and stay through sunset; watch the dunes slowly change color and glow.
The nearest town is Alamogordo. I’ve stayed at the White Sands Motel (1101 S. White Sands Blvd) on a few occasions (cheap, clean, no frills). Margo’s Restaurant (504 East First Street) offers great Mexican fair for under $10 (try the yummy enchiladas).
Ok, you get the idea; Now it’s your turn. Start sending me your entries! Email me here.

Woah. I need to go there!
These pictures are incredible!
Those dunes are pretty amazing- and are making me consider if any of my own travel pics are porn worthy…
Hi Keith! Greetings from the other side of the globe. Your pictures make me nostalgic — we did the Alkali Flat Trail a few years back and it was incredible. The air was pretty comfortable in February, in fact the sand was freakishly cool and refreshing. It’s an awesome place but you can really lose yourself in those pristine dunes real fast. And yes, all our photos are glared to death so I’m remembering the good times through yours!
